The objective of the conference is to deepen the understanding of multicultural society by combining various approaches. Different disciplines apply different tools and methods of analysis which results in dispersion of research, so the task of integration of scientific examination of multiculturalism seems to be a challenge that needs to be faced.
Vital political and social changes witnessed by contemporary world result in multi-aspect transformation of societies. International migrations lead to increasing multiculturalism of states and cities, to some extent help fight economic problems of European wealthy societies but at the same result in increase of social tension and xenophobia. Ethnic and religious contrasts seem to pose a great amount of uncertainty about how to administer and shape new type of society and what policies should be implemented so as to enable further development of societies. Another questions arise, whether Europe has for decades become more a multicultural pot where different cultures melt or rather a set of separate groups that hardly overlap? How to act in front of ethnic ghettos and resulting problems? How not to put minority communities aside of the main stream of social and political life of immigration countries? How to fight new types of chauvinism targeting ethnic and religious minorities? How to overcome the visible process of criminalisation of international migration and deeply rooted perception of a stranger, governed by fear of the unknown? How to combine multiculturalism with social coherence of European societies? What type of group is created by fresh immigrants in European countries – shall we call them national minorities?
The organisers of the conference invite speakers to focus on the following issues:
- Co-existence of multiple ethnic groups within the frame of united Europe.
- Internal borders within multicultural societies.
- International migrations as a factor increasing multiculturalism.
- Muslim communities and immigrants in Europe – a challenge for policy-makers?
- Post-9/11 world as seen from multicultural Europe’s perspective.
- Multicultural society – a reality, a goal or a myth?
Suggestions for additional themes are also welcome.
