   Borders are phenomena that interest governments, people living in borderlands and researchers. They define and confine state territories and provide condition for its sovereignty. Border is both a place of security and a place of risk. A border conflict concerns the differences in the territorial definition of the border between contiguous states. Many academics representing various disciplines study borders and look for their relevant conceptualization. It seems however, there exists a need of increasingly intensive research on border conflicts, as both their comprehensive nature and high potential for threatening stability and security of the world locate them amongst the most perilous issues of the contemporary world. Therefore, a conference creating an arena for debate and exchange of ideas over border conflicts appears to be essential.

   The conference is designed to be interdisciplinary, uniting and combining approaches of political geography and international relations to border conflict issue. The aim of the conference is to discuss the border at risk, when conflict between neighboring countries appear, and to focus on the following issues:

  • Concepts of border stability and instability;

  • Differences between physiographical and political border and determinants for its stability;

  • Variables that generate border conflict;

  • Empirical studies of border conflicts;

  • Borders settlements and agreements after tense bilateral relations;

  • Impact of modern technology at the border on the probability of war or peace between neighboring states;

  • Influence of direct contacts at the border onto conflict intensity;

  • Correlation between types of borders and probability of conflict outburst;

  • Border permeability and probability of conflict;

  • Are borders still only territorial phenomena when economic globalization and de-territorialization of threats take place in the contemporary world;

  • Whether economic alliances provide provisions for border stability;

  • Where are the most sensitive and ‘dangerous’ borders located;

  • Do we experience a twilight of border conflicts or it is still a current and vivid problem in the world;

  • What are the factors that drive the development of border conflicts;

  • What are direct and indirect costs of border conflicts;

   We would like to meet academics representing different disciplines and also practitioners dealing with borders from all over the world. The conference is to take place in Lublin – a city situated in borderland region and notorious for its cross-cultural heritage. The language of the conference will be English. After careful review process a monographic publication comprising accepted papers of high standard will be published. It is expected to elaborate theoretical and empirical study on border conflicts that will contribute to both political geography and international relations.
